The Zytglogge is a medieval tower located in the old city center of Bern. The tower has a rich history, dating back to the 13th century, and it’s one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. Visitors can climb to the top of the tower for sweeping views of Bern and its surroundings. The Zytglogge is also home to a large clock, which has been ticking since 1530. There are four dials on the clock, each representing something different: hours (top), minutes (right), seconds (left) and months (bottom). If you’re not keen on climbing up all those stairs, there are windows at various points along the way that allow you to see out into Bern. It costs 4 Swiss francs to enter the tower, but with such great views from both inside and outside of it, we think it’s worth it!

Bern Minster

The first stop on any tour of Bern’s Old Town should be at its centerpiece, the mighty Gothic cathedral known as the Bern Minster. Construction on this house of worship began in 1421 and wasn’t completed until 1893. That’s a pretty long time for a building project! But when you see the Minster up close, you’ll understand why it took so long. It’s an incredible monument with three different faces; inside, nearly every inch is covered with intricate carvings and sculptures. There are also plenty of historic treasures worth checking out here, including a copy of the original Swiss Federal Charter from 1291.
