The Eiffel Tower to Go Dark an Hour Earlier in Solidarity with Earth Hour

The Eiffel Tower will go dark in solidarity with Earth Hour, the annual environmental awareness event that takes place on March 19th at 8:30 pm, local time. This year the Tower will turn off its lights one hour earlier, at 7:30 pm. The event was started in 2007 by the World Wildlife Fund to bring light to climate change and carbon emissions issues and encourages people worldwide to turn off their lights for an hour as well.

The Eiffel Tower, which stands in for Paris, illuminates the nighttime horizon. One of the most recognised sites in the whole globe, it is visible from every part of the French capital. However, the tower will be less visible from the third week of September.

The Eiffel Tower is available to tourists from 9:30 in the morning until 23:45 at night and is the most popular paid monument in the world. Night sensors turn on the LED projectors automatically, keeping the lights on until one in the morning.

On September 23, the tower will instead go down at 22:45, turning out its lights one hour sooner. The decision was made in response to a new drive by the city to reduce its use of power in light of Russia’s reduction in gas exports to nations that support Ukraine.

“Like the rest of France, Paris is being affected by the energy crisis. Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, tweeted, “We didn’t wait to act; since 2014, we have spent 10 billion euros in the ecological transition. But in order to save 10% on energy, the first steps must be taken further.

As part of the plan, additional city-run landmarks including Saint-Jacques Tower and City Hall will turn down their lights at 10 p.m. According to Hodalgo, she would also demand that the government change the illumination at iconic landmarks like the Arc de Triomphe.
