The Do’s and Don’ts of Checking Into a Hotel

It’s the start of a wonderful vacation, and you’re just about to check into your hotel. Before you do, don’t forget to keep these do’s and don’ts in mind so you have the best experience possible. Do remember that even if your hotel room seems nice when you arrive, it may not be as clean as you like once you actually check in.

Don’t: Touch Anything
Check into your room, but don’t touch anything. You want to avoid carrying any unwanted germs or bacteria with you to the room. Once you’ve checked in, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching anything in the hotel room. After washing your hands, it’s important that you also disinfect any surfaces that could be easily touched by others, such as doorknobs or light switches.

Do: Complain If Housekeeping Doesn’t Show
It can be hard to get housekeeping to come back if you’ve already checked out, but it’s worth it. If they don’t come back, then at least you know that they won’t bother your room anymore.
It can also be hard to get housekeeping to come back if you’re checking in late (after 8 pm) but they should still knock on the door and ask if they can clean your room.

Don’t: Take It Personally
Don’t take it personally if the hotel staff doesn’t acknowledge your arrival. They are often busy with other guests, so don’t take it as an insult. While you may feel like you deserve to be recognized for being such a valuable customer, think about all the other guests who arrive every day.

Do: Take Advantage Of Concierge Services
Make it your mission to take advantage of the concierge services available at hotels. These specially trained professionals can help you find things to do in town, where the best restaurants are, or even provide some tips for local attractions. There is no such thing as knowing too much when it comes to travel!

Don’t: Assume Anything Is Free
Don’t assume anything is free when you’re checking into a hotel. From wireless internet access to coffee, be prepared to pay for everything up front. It’s also smart to ask about the costs before you make your reservation, so you know what you’re getting yourself into.

Do: Tip Room Service Staff
If you’re ordering room service, be sure to leave a tip! This is the equivalent to tipping the person who delivered your food at a restaurant. If you don’t want to tip, it’s okay to ask for the gratuity charge to be removed from your bill.

Don’t: Leave Food Out
Don’t leave food out, even if you have it wrapped up in plastic. It’ll start to smell bad and attract bugs. Instead, place it in the fridge or bring it with you on your trip.

Do: Use Modern Technology When Possible
-Use their app to find your way around the hotel and get fast check-in.
-Call ahead to make sure they have your reservation, so you don’t have to wait in long lines when you arrive.
-Find out if there is a charge for parking or Wi-Fi before you commit to staying at the hotel.
-Pay attention to reviews, as they can offer valuable feedback on the quality of service that guests experienced during their stay.
