A Museum of Art

The Kunstmuseum has been open since 1661 and is home to the oldest public art collection in the world. It is one of the largest cultural institutions in Basel and one of the most important museums in Switzerland, with a collection of art dating back to the 15th century. In addition to paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints from all over Europe and Asia, it also contains many valuable works by Swiss artists such as Hodler, Cuno Amiet and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.

There are several museums and galleries in Basel devoted to contemporary art, so if you’re interested in modern art, you won’t be disappointed. In addition to regular exhibitions showcasing emerging local and international artists, Kunsthalle is one of the best. It has an extensive collection with pieces by many of the most famous names in 20th century art.

Swiss Museum Tinguely

There is an entire museum in Basel dedicated to the work of Swiss artist and sculptor Jean Tinguely, best known for his kinetic art. 55 of his sculptures have been donated to the museum by his wife, but many more of his pieces can be found in their halls. The first floor contains sketches, drawings, prints and paintings from other artists that influenced him. The second floor contains a large collection of his own sketches as well as life-size versions of some of his most famous works such as Homage to New York (1963)
