Vienna’s cafe culture is as traditional as it gets, and this is true for both the coffee and the baked pastries that are served there. In actuality, the Sachertorte is a special chocolate cake enriched with jam that was developed decades ago and is still served there today in numerous cafés. Other popular sweets include Lebkuchen (similar to gingerbread), Krapfen (doughnuts), apple strudel, and Kaiserschmarrn (a shredded pancake dish). Each of these dishes can be found at any number of Viennese bakeries or restaurants. But don’t let me spoil the surprise; you’ll have to try them yourself!

We’re here to tell you that the fast food restaurant chain known as Wienerschnitzel didn’t just come up with that name on the spot if you’re familiar with it. The word “Wiener” literally means “Vienna,” and “schnitzel” is a meal made with breaded chicken. That should demonstrate how familiar this meal is to Viennans. And it’s not hard to see why, either: It’s rich, heavy and comforting while also being relatively inexpensive, which makes it an ideal candidate for a quick lunch or dinner when you don’t have time for anything fancier. For a true Wiener schnitzel experience, be sure to ask for your schnitzel wiener mit hausgemachter bohnensuppe (i.e., housemade beansoup) and Kartoffelsalat (potato salad).

As previously said, there are good reasons why Vienna has a long history of café culture. One of them is that they know how to create a delectable cappuccino, and they make a special melange—a cappuccino with a whipped cream twist—in particular . It’s only the thing for a hot summer day when all you want to do is lounge on the banks of the Danube, sip your drink and watch the world go by. In order to get the full effect, it’s best to order an Espresso-Melange at one of these famous Viennese cafés: The Coffee House Besenzi (the original), Café Central or Café Landtmann.
