Road Tripping on a Dime: Places to Visit on a Budget

No, you don’t have to be rich to take that road trip you’ve always dreamed of. In fact, you don’t even have to be married—though it certainly helps if you have a companion in crime with whom you can share gas money, hotel rooms and all the fun times along the way. All that’s required of you is an open mind, a sense of adventure and a little bit of creativity when it comes to finding affordable lodging and figuring out how to get around quickly and economically.

It should come as no surprise that Route 66 voted as the top vacation spot. After all, Jack Kerouac was inspired to write On the Road by the interstate that runs across the country from Chicago to Santa Monica. You won’t get bored with all the odd hotels and odd locations here. Who knows what you’ll find next? The vibe of Route 66 is worth the money alone, but don’t forget about those iconic roadside attractions!

It’s breathtaking to see California’s coastline. Big Sur has been described as “an lonely stretch of road, mythological in renown” because of its rough hillsides, redwood trees, and beaches. Make sure to check out the Point Sur Lightstation and the Bixby Creek Bridge. Great Barrier Reef — Australia: You’ll be stunned by this coral reef system that is located off the coast of Queensland. You can go scuba diving with all sorts of different sea creatures or go snorkeling to get up close views. There are many tours available, so you can take your pick! Ho Chi Minh Trail — Vietnam

The Wild Atlantic Way is the longest road journey in Ireland, running from Cork to Donegal and departing from the United States. There are cliffs, beaches, hiking trails, and a dark sky reserve throughout the 1,500-mile route!
