Do You Need a Passport to Go to Hawaii?

Many people dream of vacationing in Hawaii, but it’s not always easy to get there. The U.S. Department of State requires all visitors to Hawaii, including residents of other U.S. states, to have a valid passport and to purchase an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) via the ESTA website before boarding any flight or cruise ship bound for Hawaii. Keep reading to learn more about how you can obtain the right travel documents needed to visit this beautiful U.S. state!

Types of Passports and Visas
A passport is a travel document that you can use when crossing international borders. A visa is granted by a country in order to allow someone to enter its territory. A tourist visa allows the holder to visit for a short time (usually for tourism or medical treatment). An immigrant visa allows the holder to live and work permanently in the host country, but does not grant citizenship. An asylum seeker’s visa allows them access into the host country until their application for asylum has been processed.

Emergency Passports
There are two types of emergency passports: the U.S. Department of State (DOS) passport and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) travel document, but they both offer limited travel privileges. The DOS will issue an emergency passport if you have lost your passport or it has been stolen abroad, while DHS will issue one in the event that you are a U.S.

Traveling on an Expired Visa or Passport
If you travel abroad without an updated visa or passport, you will be considered as having overstayed your entry. This could lead to complications with U.S. Customs and Border Protection when re-entering the country and you may not be allowed back in without legal authorization.

How to Book Your Flight Without a Visa (If you have all the right documents)
When traveling internationally, travelers need to have their passport, visa and any other necessary documents. If you’re traveling from one country in the U.S.A to another country in the U.S.A., then you’ll only need your passport for identification purposes. You can fly from one city to another without needing a visa if you are going from Miami, Florida to New York City, New York. The United States has no exit or entry requirements for Americans when coming back into the country after being out of it for less than 180 days.

Getting into the United States with an Unsigned Travel Authorization Form
An unsigned travel authorization form is not enough to get into the United States. To enter the country, you will need a valid passport as well as one of the following: an extension of your current visa; an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) which replaced the Visa Waiver Program; or proof that you are in the US with lawful immigration status. When these requirements are met, you can present either your passport or ETA at customs and immigration checkpoints.
