3 Unique Things to do in Baku, Azerbaijan

If you’re looking to have fun while traveling to Baku, Azerbaijan, try one of these five unique things to do while in the beautiful city by the Caspian Sea. Whether you’re planning on staying in the city center or traveling just outside of town, these activities will keep you busy during your trip!

Heydar Aliyev Center
The Heydar Aliyev centre, named after one of the nation’s past presidents, is the most significant cultural facility in Azerbaijan. You’ll discover a museum and many exhibition rooms with some of the finest painters’ creations within. Apart from that, there are also two theatre halls which present various performances throughout the year. Not far from this venue is an Opera House which showcases opera and ballet performances throughout the year. It was built between 2009-2011 by award winning architect Zaha Hadid.

Visit the Old City
The Palace of the Shirvanshahs, built in the 15th century, and the Maiden tower, built in the 12th century, are two of the historical landmarks located in Baku’s old city, which is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the alleys of the historic city or pause for a cup of tea. Stroll through the Central Market, where you can purchase fresh produce, clothes and spices. Try some of the dishes made famous by Azerbaijani cuisine such as plov (fried rice with lamb), kebabs and dolma (stuffed grape leaves). For those looking to get active, try walking along the promenade or taking a horse-drawn carriage ride around town.

Azerbaijan Carpet Museum
This museum contains some extremely exquisite and distinctive Azerbaijani art and antiques, including elaborate carpets woven using traditional methods, despite the fact that it may sound strange. The name Azerbaijan Carpet Museum is a misnomer because not all of the carpets displayed are actually from Azerbaijan! Nevertheless, if you have time during your visit to Baku, this would be a great place to check out.
