5 Nature Hikes in Los Angeles That Will Knock Your Socks Off

Los Angeles may be known for being the city of celebrities, movie stars, and entertainment, but it’s also home to some natural wonders that will blow your mind—and put those famous hiking trails in the San Gabriel Mountains to shame. Don’t believe us? Check out these five awesome nature hikes you can take in LA County to prove us right!

Runyon Canyon

This climb is simple enough for the whole family to do and offers a breathtaking vista at the summit—perfect for watching the sun set. This is maybe the most well-liked trek in LA, and local dog walkers and yogis love to come here. In fact, it’s so well-liked that famous people are frequently spotted there as well. On any given day you might see the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio or Justin Bieber. It’s free, too! All you need is a good pair of shoes (and if it’s super hot out, bring some water with you). You can get there from Hollywood by taking Franklin Avenue and making your way up to Fuller Avenue. There will be an entrance on your left side. Once inside, head straight up and watch out for cars!

Sandstone Peak

This trek is undoubtedly one of the greatest in Southern California, even though it is more longer and harder than Runyon. You’ll reach the peak of the Santa Monica Mountains by ascending its rough, steep route. Although the view when you arrive there is breathtaking, the trek there is equally as worthwhile. One of the best parts about this hike is that you can do it with your dog, too! As an added bonus, Sandstone Peak’s summit offers incredible views of Malibu and Calabasas to the north, Catalina Island to the south, Pacific Palisades below, and many others. If you want a challenge that will make you feel like a champion once completed, look no further!

Malibu Creek State Park

This is the spot for you if you enjoy a little bit of everything. Rock climbing, magnificent lakes, intricate geologic beauty, and ranching are all included at Malibu Creek State Park. If you’re like that kind of thing, its stunning environment has also served as the backdrop for a few movies. It’s not too far from LA either, so it’s a great place to visit on the weekends. San Gabriel River Trail: It might be shorter than some other hikes on this list but it’s beautiful nonetheless. You’ll have a chance to see some spectacular waterfalls, native plants, and wildlife when you take this hike through Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area. There are picnic tables and BBQs available for those who want to spend the day here.
