Progreso, Mexico, located in the southern part of the Yucatan Peninsula, has been drawing visitors from all over for decades with its beautiful beaches and historical sites. However, there are plenty of things to do here that aren’t immediately apparent to people who live here or have visited before, so we wanted to share our insider’s knowledge of what to do in Progreso, Mexico. Here are three things you should try when you visit!

Visit Mayan Ruins

You may take a day excursion from Progreso to numerous other well-known Mayan sites, including Chichen Itza and Uxmal. Both are unquestionably worthwhile visits since they provide visitors of all ages an engaging method to learn about history firsthand. Chichen Itza was the site of the famous El Castillo pyramid, with its four staircases that symbolize the cardinal directions. If you happen to be able to climb these four stairs then you will have completed one full cycle of life (birth – death).

The colonies of flamingos that congregate in the Parque Natural Ra Lagartos are among the most magnificent views you can witness in Progreso. It’s unforgettable to witness these lovely animals in their natural settings. Visitors come from all over the world to see them and enjoy a day out on this beautiful coastline. Be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen, water, and mosquito repellent as it is often hot here! There are also several restaurants nearby if you’re looking for some food or drinks before or after your visit.

See the Pink Lakes

Have the flamingos’ pink already worn you out? Then proceed to Las Coloradas, where lakes have waters that are pink. Although you cannot swim with them, they are nonetheless really amazing to see and capture on camera. The landscape is perfect for photos as well, so don’t forget your phone or a point-and-shoot camera when visiting this area.
